About additive-free

Tequila rules allow up to 1% of abocantes — glycerin, caramel colour, oak extract and sugar-based syrup — without any mention on the label. That 1% can round a young spirit, darken a barrel that did not do its job, or add a sweetness the agave never had.

Every bottle on this shelf is listed by the Additive-Free Alliance, an independent program that buys bottles at retail and lab-tests them, or is declared additive-free by its producer. If we cannot confirm it, the bottle is not here.

What collectors ask

How is additive-free verified?

The Additive-Free Alliance purchases bottles at retail, lab-tests and tastes them, and publishes the list. Some producers publish their own declarations; we flag those separately from Alliance listings when we can.

Does additive-free mean better?

It means the flavour came from agave, fermentation, distillation and wood only. Many people prefer that; some do not. It is a fact about process, not a score.

Is blanco automatically additive-free?

No. The standard says blanco should be made without abocantes, but verification is what confirms it.
