About blanco

Blanco is tequila with nowhere to hide. Bottled within two months of distillation, usually straight from the still or after a short rest in steel, it shows the agave, the water and the cooking method with nothing in the way. Two blancos from the same town can taste completely different, which is exactly why it is the expression collectors argue about most.

Expect cooked agave, citrus, white pepper and, from highland producers, a sweeter, more floral edge. It is the right place to start with a new distillery and the backbone of every serious margarita.

Questions

What collectors ask

Is blanco the same as silver or plata?

Yes. Blanco, plata, silver and white all describe unaged tequila. Joven is different: a blend that includes some aged tequila.

Why are some blancos much more expensive?

Agave from mature plants, slow cooking in stone ovens, tahona milling and small stills cost more and taste different. Bottle price tracks process more than age.

Neat or in cocktails?

Both. A well-made blanco is a sipping spirit; it is also the tequila that makes a margarita taste of agave rather than sugar.
