Description

Don Gregorio Hernandez and his sons Valentín and Joel make this mezcal in La Compañía, in Oaxaca's Ejutla district. Their La Soledad distillery sits on a hilly plateau at 5,000 feet in the Valles Centrales. The Hernandez family's work belongs to the mezcal tradition of this village, where agave grows under demanding conditions. Nuestra Soledad Ejutla brings that family and place into focus.

Earth and wild herbs lead the nose. Roasted agave follows, with a light trace of smoke. On the palate, black pepper and cloves sit alongside the earthiness. Cooked agave hearts and caramelized agave lend a restrained sweetness. Smoke becomes more pronounced through the sip, threading through the spice and agave.

Pour neat into a copita or small stemmed glass. Take small sips. An orange or grapefruit slice alongside offers a citrus counterpoint to the earthy, smoky notes.
