Description
Guanajuato-grown Tequilana Weber blue agave travels to Plantaciones Tequilana in Los Altos, Jalisco, for El Ateo Añejo. The 100% agave tequila begins with slow roasting in stone and brick ovens. Tahona crushing precedes two distillations in stainless steel pot stills with copper coils. Used American white oak bourbon barrels provide the rest before bottling at 40% ABV.
Cooked agave, vanilla and butterscotch meet oak on the nose. Caramelized agave leads the palate, accompanied by cinnamon and black pepper. A subtle briny note runs beneath the barrel flavors. The finish is warm and lingering, carrying sweet agave, wood spice and a faint trace of pepper.
Serve neat at room temperature in a tequila glass or snifter. A large ice cube brings vanilla and butterscotch forward. A few drops of water emphasize caramelized agave.
