About reposado

Reposado means rested: two months to a year in oak, most often ex-bourbon barrels. The wood rounds the edges and adds vanilla, caramel and a little spice, but a good reposado still tastes of agave first. It is the most versatile shelf in the vault and the one most people reach for on an ordinary evening.

Colour is not a quality signal. A pale reposado from a tired barrel can be more complex than a dark one, and caramel colouring is permitted unless the bottle is additive-free.

What collectors ask

How long is a reposado aged?

Between two and twelve months in oak of any size. Beyond a year it becomes añejo.

Does reposado work in cocktails?

Very well. It gives an old fashioned or a paloma a rounder body; it is also the classic choice for a spicy margarita.

What is a cristalino reposado?

A reposado filtered through charcoal to remove colour while keeping some barrel character. We list cristalinos on their own shelf.
